June 17,2009

Sent this one that I wrote earlier on the picnic table, via WIFI from Boston Pizza in Battleford, SK with 74,000 miles on the odometer.

Kathy at Saskatchewan

It’s the morning of June 17 at 0638 (the sun rose sometime shortly after 0400) and I’ve already showered and waiting for the coffee to brew here at Davidson, Saskatchewan; just south of Saskatoon. We are now at the 51 N parallel/ Latitude, the nights are only about 7 hours long now. It’s a nice small town campground, seems like most towns in Canada have a campground with hot water and electricity that is a bit cheaper than the provincial parks.  This is our favorite campsite so far.

We are still avoiding the rain and on the dryer side of the country now. You Americans (doesn’t that sound weird since Canadians live in N. America, shouldn’t they be considered American’s too) sure are getting pummeled down there with those storms in the Midwest and South. The roads are nice here in Saskatchewan compared to Manitoba. I got the Bike/Trailer up to 110 yesterday, the highest speed limit I’ve seen. Guess I ought to tell ya that was in kilometers per hour. We did 600 miles yesterday; hope to make Edmonton, Alberta today.

110 KPH

The odometer reads 73,857 and everything seems to be running great, even at 75 mph, which was the speed limit from Grand Forks, ND to the border.  During the warp drive episode I only got 27.91 mpg. In Canada I’m averaging a little over 9 miles to the liter.

Were at 2,000’ elevation and it is much like the Great Plains in the US. It’s very warm here at 29 degrees C, that’s about 85 degrees for you people in the States. The low was about 14C this morning, about 57F. I think it might remain like this to Fairbanks, AK

Well other then covering a few more miles and eating pizza.  Rain lurking in our path again...I might have to put the rain suit on, we might just wait for it to blow over.

We made it to Alberta

PS: Had a Canadian warn me about I should be wearing leathers when I drive in the rain.  I thought maybe it was some Provincial Law?  No, he said for when you go down, i.e. fall/ slide.  I said, I’ll have worse problems motioning to Miss Daisy my passenger than a little road rash.  Guess these guys don’t ride in inclement weather.

Another thing I will tell you about the license plate, is many asked if we rode it all the way from TN.  Near the end of our trip I started to reply, “No, we just stuck it on there to get you to ask the question”.  You have to be a hard core motorcyclist to understand my irritation with the question.  We do not consider those that trailer bikes to be true motorcyclist, they are the ones usually involved in the accidents at the rallies.

Here is another saying we have for some riders out there, BAMBI = Born Again Middle-Aged Biker, I learned that one actually as a MSF Motorcycle Safety Instructor.

LOL,

Gz
